  1. make inform 7 a portable app

create an installation-free version of inform 7 for windows to go alongside the existing one, for those who would like to run it direct from a USB stick and do not wish/have permissions for installations on the windows system they are using.

    • (Syntax) A way to change the condition of an existing rule

One of the common (remaining) cases for procedural rules is to *conditionally* suppress library rules:

A procedural rule: if the Hat is worn, ignore the can't go through closed doors rule.

The compile-time way to do this is to delist the rule and replace it with an equivalent rule that does the same thing, sometimes.

I'd like a simple compile-time declaration for this:

The can't go through closed doors rule doesn't apply when the Hat is worn.

(Or equivalently: "The can't go through closed doors rule applies when the Hat is not worn" or "The can't go through closed doors…

A Raspberry Pi version now exists, and unsupported versions dropped from the 6L02 release page. (If anyone wants other types/versions than are currently supported, we would likely need a volunteer to compile them; the options listed represent the hardware currently available to the dev team.)

        • (World Model) Change the definition of unlocks to allow multiple keys

Currently, unlocks as a relation is defined so that only one key can unlock a given door. It's possible, but annoying, to hack around this. Why not rewrite the relation to relate various keys to various doors, and let authors create skeleton keys (applicable to several doors at once) or easily unlocked doors (on which several different keys work)?

On balance, Andrew’s point seems reasonable. An extension that redefines the unlocking relation, compatible with but not requiring Locksmith, will be bundled with future versions of Inform.

          • (World Model) Make bracketed objects in room description text mark items as mentioned

Currently, printing the name of something in bracketed text (like [the orange] or [the list of round fruits]) marks it as mentioned, preventing it from appearing later-- except if this occurs within the room description itself. It would be nice if this worked within room descriptions, so workarounds like Mentioned In Room Description by Ron Newcomb are no longer necessary.

            • (Parsing) Null token for understand grammar

The ability to define a null token in a list of alternatives in
Understand grammar, to match the existing ability to make a word optional
in a phrase definition. For example,

Understand "google for/-- [text] in/on [library computer]" as consulting
              it about (with nouns reversed).

which could match "GOOGLE FOO ON COMPUTER" or "GOOGLE FOR FOO ON COMPUTER".

While there are other ways to achieve this effect, by defining new grammar
tokens, allowing "--" would be quicker and more legible.

              • (Parsing) Way to make Inform forget all grammar for a given action

Currently if we want to forget an
action with lots of synonyms, we have to do things like

Understand the command "hit" as something new.
Understand the command "kill" as something new.
Understand the command "attack" as something new.

...which is annoying, requires going through the indices to find all the
words accepted for an action, and always leaves the author with the
apprehension that maybe he hasn't caught all of them. And it's even worse
if we want to redefine, say, *only* "get off...", but not "get": since we
have to first forget "get" as a command, then *rewrite*…

                • Make "use no scoring" the default, with "use scoring" as a use option

Scoring is a bit of a throwback, but this isn't *just* snobbery against old-school games. The current system requires you to either actively turn off the score or actively do stuff to augment the score; if "use no scoring" were the default, then those who don't want scores wouldn't have to think about it, while those who do have to think about it anyway.

This would break the code for (lots of) existing games, but there'd be a one-line fix for it, and presumably it'd be easy to design a compiler error that said "You're trying to do something to…

The Mac IDE searches on exact strings, so "suppress banner" will ONLY find the exact string "suppress banner" as if there were quotes around the search term, rather than it being two separate words with an OR between them - my suggestion to fix that is to use quotes to denote specific strings that include spaces, otherwise treat the search as a list of words with OR. Using multiple words often results in no results because those words are never adjacent, or I can use single words, and with many common words I get so many irrelevant results that I…

This is somewhere between completed and declined.

We have not adopted exactly the requested behavior, on the grounds that many concepts in Inform are represented by a multiword phrase, and making it difficult to search precisely for such a phrase would not be a net gain.

However, we have instituted other improvements to the Mac IDE search, including a stronger handling of regular expressions. For instance, typing “(fish|window)” will search for either fish or window, while “fish.*fowl” will search for fish followed by “fowl” at any distance.

Especially when creating global variables with descriptive names, the syntax is very awkward:

"The treasures remaining is a number that varies. The treasures remaining is 5."

A shorthand syntax would be helpful, such as one of the following:

The treasures remaining is a number that varies. It is 5.

The treasures remaining is a number that varies set to 5.

The treasures remaining is a number (5) that varies.

Currently Inform refuses to let the player talk to objects that aren't people or animals. Inform 6 had a "talkable" tag that overrode this, which was useful for microphones and voice-activated computers. Something similar should be exposed at the I7 level.

Handled with a built-in extension: this allows us to avoid clutter in the main library, but include information in the Recipe Book for users who might otherwise find this restriction confusing to override.

                                  • Strip turn count from the status line.

In combination with the suggestion to make "use no scoring" default, I would like to suggest stripping the turn count from the status bar. This leaves just a nice, clean status bar with only the room name.

The isolated numbers in the status bar make no sense to new players; they are ugly; and they are useless in... well, about every game I can think of.

                                    • (World model) Revise Block jumping, Block waving, and Block singing rules to "succeed"

Actions such as JUMP, WAVE, (and maybe SING) that have block rules that describe a successful outcome should count as having succeeded rather than as having failed, and the block rule changed to a report rule. OR, alternatively, the default message should be changed to imply that the player does not perform these actions.

                                        • (IDE/Documentation) Change documentation to use a CSS file rather than hardcoded formatting

This way, it would be possible to just change the CSS in one place to make the Documentation appear in a different color scheme, e.g. white on black.
