Whatever solution is adopted (or not), it would be really bad if it were possible to get stuck in a disambiguation loop. Just occasionally one encounters a game state that asks "Which do you mean, the spoon or the spoon?" -- where it's not clear what to type to disambiguate -- and currently it's at least possible to leave that situation by typing another verb instead. (One can also try "both" or something, but most novice players are probably unaware of that.)

I am unconvinced this should happen by default, myself, but I can see the appeal of it as an option. I've definitely released source text before where I knew that it would not be possible for the reader to compile, and did not *want* it to be possible for the reader to compile; it was provided only for interest value.

The *VW* tag means that we'd welcome a volunteer stepping forward to work on it, but that it's not a priority for people currently maintaining the system (there's a great deal else to keep up with). So it is unlikely to happen unless someone decides to make it their mission.

This has been extensively overhauled for the Mac IDE forthcoming. Is it also a concern with Windows?

You can (on a case by case basis) add rooms to verb handling using grammar lines. Given that the error messages (both in the core library and in extensions) weren't written with rooms in mind and might often seem pretty foolish if applied to them, I think letting authors intentionally turn on that function themselves is safer.

There are assorted ways of faking this behavior, but I can see that it’s sometimes a stumbling block for authors, and it’s easy to do wrong. Historically, the way the map was constructed meant that this kind of adjustment would have been hard to do, but we’ll see whether that has changed.

I am in favor of this, and think it fits well with other items on the agenda of the present build, to do with allowing much greater output customization overall. We’ll see.

Also "There's nothing to be found," "It's [nouns] all the way down" (probably not, but tempting).

Possible suggestions, gleaned from ifMUD: "Nothing is evident.", "That won't help.", "There's nothing to find.", "Looking under [the foo] isn't the answer to this one.", "That would only waste time.", "There's nothing there.", "There's nothing to see."

"You find nothing..." is I think intended to be fairly vague about whether you find nothing because the object is too heavy to move or because there's just nothing there. Is there a better way to phrase this? It would need to be something noncommittal that does not require the author to have flagged objects for whether they can be seen under or not.

Using indoors and outdoors properties on rooms has generally been successful for me, for this kind of project. Is that not workable for the extension? Is there a reason why regions are preferable for this purpose?

What in fact is the status of this problem at the moment? Should we still be concerned about it?

Out of curiosity, is it possible to use playfic.com via Android devices?

I don't have a clear sense of whether this is feasible, but if someone wants it, we would certainly need a volunteer willing to take the project on.

All three platforms offer some choice of font, but they handle style and colour options differently, with Windows offering the least choice for now (being confined to the current system font, though at a choice of sizes). The source panel is currently being rewritten on Windows, so that we can eventually have elastic tab stops there (a feature
newly added to OS X and Linux Inform); the new Windows source panel will be
                                  more configurable.

I'm guessing that http://inform7.uservoice.com/forums/57320-general/suggestions/751034-ide-documentation-change-documentation-to-use-a-?ref=title would address this point as well. I think that's a different request than the request to change source code formatting, implementation-wise.

FWIW, the markup used for examples in the main documentation is different and more complicated -- it's not that they automatically "know" which bits to paste in continuously, but rather that different markup is used for "paste this as part of the foregoing" and "paste this on its own".

My impression is that the difference in behavior wasn't capriciousness on Graham's part, but related to the difficulty of having Inform autogenerate the pasteable buttons for extensions in the first place. Examples for the documentation can be preprocessed quite a bit, but those for extensions have to have the Inform application make the appropriate javascript up on the fly, and as I understand it this works completely differently and is a lot more fragile.

I believe the reason for omitting builds prior to 4S08 is that a) there are a very large number of them -- this is the period between three and four years ago when we were releasing new builds every few weeks to a month sometimes, rather than every few months/year; b) they're pretty unstable, so from the perspective of having a usable game, upgrading to a more recent build is much safer. (This may not be an *adequate* reason, but that was the thinking as I understand it.)

I assume we're talking only about the main build here, not extensions -- but extension files are just text, and it would be exceptionally hard to use them maliciously, I think. (And I suspect that asking extension authors to create a digital signature would seriously cut down on the number of extensions we received.)

We have moved away from usenet as the primary venue for communicating official news about Inform (but I understand that that aspect is not the main point of your suggestion).
